Dumb Answer of the Week
What Happens When You Speak Before You Think

October 29th - November 4th, 2011

Text by: Jim Williams

We're cheating a little for the latest Dumb Answer of the Week. (Seidelman Note: We're enacting the Secily Rule, where if something insanely stupid happens on a Friday, then it can carry over.)

This one actually comes from the Friday, October 28th edition of "The Price is Right", and features one of the all time worst playings of a pricing game.

Say hello to Stephanie. She wasted no time getting on stage. In her first try, her bid of $600 was the closest on a $635 ping pong table.

Let's see what she'll play for on stage.

Looks to be a very nice outdoor furniture set and a barbecue grill.

She'll try to win that very outdoor assortment of items playing "Freeze Frame".

All she has to do is pull the lever when the two squares in the top frame match the price of the prize.

After winning a $635 ping pong table, one has to figure that the price of the outdoor furniture and grill is worth a few thousand dollars. Seeing a lot of low numbers cycling around the frame, I'd like to think she has a decent shot at winning here.

So after consulting with her choir friends, she decides to pull the lever when the frame reads...

...which elicits brief, stunned silence from the audience.

It's 2011, not 1972! Last I checked this was The Price is Right and not...

Hmmm, I wonder how Dick Martin would have handled this.

In fairness, Drew Carey handled this moment quite well, "$1199...for outdoor furniture and a grill. Well, you must have a coupon."

And as you can no doubt see, this show isn't "The Coupon Is Right".

And after failing to win in the showcase showdown, poor Stephanie ends up with a ping pong table and the Dumb Answer of the Week.

Until next time...

"Remember, it's not whether you win or lose, it's how much it costs you!"
